This comment was submitted to NHTSA and appeared on Regulations.gov.
This is why we can't have nice things, like, a more open government.
Also, why is someone importing Outlander MPVs to the US? Are those in high demand?

ummm... from our European CCIARAT adventures, the last thing we want is hatchbacks :]
i've rented many a euro hatchback when I visit my wife in Mexico DF, yeah...no! $13,000 for a Seat, Peg, Renault little whatever? Nope. I think it's more Jalop to go on CL and find something with actual power or jalop worthy characteristics for half that over a 207 or Clio.
But don't listen to me, I'm not an enthusiast :]

FWIW, most cars available in the USA far exceed the safety standards of the NHTSA. For this you can blame hysterical soccer moms, not the federal government. And you can blame the American auto industry for the paucity of European hatchbacks/wagons. They sell the boring-ass sedan version of whatever hatchback the anonymous petitioner probably wants, and that has been built to US safety standards. The hatchback version probably would meet those standards as well, but whatever car company that makes it chooses not to offer it here.
People blame the government for way too much shit, IMO, and it's gotten worse since 2009 even without the then-new President having actually done anything. A Democrat gets elected to office, and the usual suspects (Fox News, etc.) go into kneejerk mode about taxes, regulations, and guns. You can set your watch by it.

The guy wants a hatch from Europe? What's wrong with the Mini? Or Golf? Or Fiat 500?

This is what happens when your garden variety idiot Jalop participates in Government, which is no different than the garden variety idiot from any enthusiast sect.
I'm sure there are plenty of smart and well versed Jalops who could actually phrase things in a better manner and make more compelling arguments.

The MINI's too inefficiently designed, the Golf's too boring, and the 500's too small. (Or, hey, perhaps he just wants one of the many, many European hatchbacks that aren't sold in the US. Don't ask me: so far as I'm concerned, the best of the - modern - bunch is the Fiesta ST, and America finally started getting that a couple of years ago.)

Something like "having a unique set of regulations for vehicles in the United States makes it more difficult for global automotive companies based in America to expand and thrive" might've been a better way of putting this.
The corollary, of course, is that working with other international safety organizations would mean that cool Euro hot hatches could be legal here. But yeah, wrong point to lead with. Stick to the business case.

Obviously, he wanted the Civic Si R-type.
